The piston of an axial piston pump must somehow be pulled outward from its cylinder. On small pumps, this can be accomplished by a spring inside the cylinder that pushes the piston towards the cylinder. The inlet fluid pressure can also be set such that the fluid pushes the piston upward toward the cylinder. Typically, vane pumps are located on the same drive shaft to provide this pressure, and it also allows the pump assembly to draw fluid from certain suction heads of the reservoir, which is not an attribute of independent axial piston pumps.
